Yes, there is a difference of level. In England this is called a Ha Ha. I was reading Jane Austen and had to look up what that meant. “They were looking over the ha ha.” Then we watched a documentary last night about Maya Lin. This is a design by Maya Lin of a memorial built in Washington DC…a 20 yo Asian woman designed a Viet Nam memorial to honor the fallen instead of hyping the nationalism of war. And there it was again — a ha ha! It is a shiny, black wall, with grass above and below. The names of the dead soldiers are in chronological order as you walk by, searching for names…56,000+ names.
Some people at the time thought it was not dramatic enough of a memorial — they were used to statues and flags — but, luckily, cooler minds prevailed and it was built. She was still a student at Yale when her design was chosen from all those submitted. This is my interpretation of the memorial/ha ha.
